Restructured circulation breathes new life into this housing scheme
We were commissioned by Tuntum Housing Association to refurbish and convert an existing failing sheltered housing scheme. Built in the late 1960’s, it consists of 26 bungalows and flats together with a community centre.
Although the refurbishment and upgrading of the individual flats, facilities and improvements to the thermal performance of the building were important, it was the restructuring of the entrance, circulation, common areas and external space that made the biggest difference to the overall success of the scheme.
At the heart of the scheme is a central courtyard that we comprehensively redesigned to provide a pleasant garden for informal use by all the tenants or for community events. Around this courtyard garden runs a new enclosed circulation space, which was widened to include seating and glazed screens with doors opening out into the garden. The flats open directly onto this circulation space which functions as a pleasant communal area.
