A new and richly detailed identity for town’s historic public space
This is our shortlisted competition design for one of Blackpool’s signature town squares. St John’s Precinct is a busy hub within the town’s retail district, forming part of the historic cultural core of Blackpool. With funding from the Townscape Heritage Initiative, the project sought to create a key activity and events space, employing high quality materials in-keeping with the historic context of the area.
Our design takes inspiration from arabesque and gothic architecture, and is reminiscent of the rich interiors of Blackpool’s public halls and ballrooms. The bold patterning is used throughout the scheme in the paving, street furniture and artwork features.
In St John’s Square the church forms the backdrop to the newly created shared public space which stretches across to the Winter Gardens. In Cedar Square, elaborate screens frame a carpet-like floorscape inset with illuminated water jets, creating a lavish room to play host to outdoor cafes and events.
