New-build studio teaching space for the School of Art & Design
This additional studio teaching space, built for Nottingham Trent University, was designed as an annexe to the existing School of Art and Design. The very small and difficult adjacent site required some tight planning to maximise the space and north light required for the studio.
The new building forms a small courtyard with the existing building, linked via a bridge. The masonry elevation to the south, facing the existing building, provides a continuity with the existing structure. The north elevation is much lighter, being clad in timber with large glazed openings. Internally, the exposed concrete soffit, steel structure and services give a working, industrial aesthetic.
