New-build village extension creates housing with a sense of place

We worked alongside local Housing Association emh homes to design this new-build village extension at Breedon-on-the-Hill, which was delivered through a Design & Build contract. The completed 10-unit scheme provides a mix of 1 and 2-bed houses, bungalows and flats, developed in response to a local Housing Need Survey undertaken in 2011.

The houses are designed to echo the form, scale and materiality of the local village vernacular, and are grouped into disparate buildings to add character. We introduced a range of finishes found elsewhere in the village with a materials palette that includes red brick, render and black-stained timber cladding.

The layout was informed by the south-facing slope of the site and the desire to maximise solar gain whilst limiting the steepness of the slope between parking spaces and the level thresholds to all houses. The dwellings are arranged to enclose an intimate and informal shared courtyard space which is laid out along HomeZone principles. This spaces serves both as a protected and over-looked parking court, and as a social meeting place for the residents.
