A new public space, set within a Victorian industrial structure
The Gasholder No.8 design competition sought ideas for a new public park, set within the heritage heart of the 67 acre King’s Cross redevelopment.
Our design features a central canopy of translucent fabric stretched over a filigree steel structure. This illuminated structural weave makes reference to gas lamps, mantle gauzes and rings of light and fire. Sheltered beneath this, the central performance space is enclosed by amphitheatre-style seating, which houses a café and WC facilities below.
An elevated canal-side viewing platform enhances the setting for the relocated cast iron structure. A dynamic arrangement of sculptural play structures, trees and benches radiate out from the gasholder, providing a multi-purpose family destination in which people can relax, have fun and be entertained.
