Phased works to expand and refurbish an existing primary school
In response to the growing local population, Southend-on-Sea Borough Council has embarked on a comprehensive school expansion programme. At Milton Hall we were appointed to provide 8 new classrooms, along with an IT suite, offices, educational support and nursery facilities, to an already congested site. The solution required splitting the accommodation into two separate buildings, and dividing the work into phases.
Phase 1 saw the first 2-storey classroom block added to the site, providing the much needed additional classbases. This new building sits along the northern edge of the site, addressing the playing fields to the west, and creating a new courtyard playground to the south. White render is used to achieve the sculptural forms, and to sit sympathetically alongside the existing CLASP school. The use of bold colours and a circle motif is employed throughout the design as a playful element.
A second building saw the replacement of temporary accommodation with an additional teaching block and new nursery facility. Meanwhile, the main school building was partly refurbished to expand the school hall and improve the staff facilities. The completed buildings successfully address the previously under-utilised areas of the site and have created new courtyard playgrounds for both the nursery and infant pupils.
