Housing scheme designed as part of a masterplanned urban extension
This competition entry, for a sustainable urban extension on the outskirts of Northampton, is for a site masterplanned by English Partnerships.
The masterplan and accompanying design code set very high standards in terms of design quality and housing density, with a mix of market and affordable tenures. The submitted designs were also assessed for their urban design and the public realm contributions to the wider scheme.
Key targets for environmental performance and sustainability were also measured in order to achieve BREEAM EcoHomes ‘Excellent’ and National Home Energy Rating ‘10’. All houses include passive solar heating, rainwater harvesting, photovoltaic electricity generation, passive stack ventilation, sheep’s wool loft insulation and biomass central heating, with green roofs and micro CHP available in selected dwellings.
