practice profile

Letts Wheeler Architects were formed in 1996 and are based in Nottingham. We have established ourselves as a regional practice that is recognised nationally for the quality of our work, through a number of competition winning entries, design awards and the track record of our built work.

The practice was founded on a combination of small, detailed projects and competition entries. Though the practice has now expanded, the design ethos developed through these remains key to the practice’s work, and still informs our larger scale projects.

Through our work we have developed a strong and consistent design philosophy that demonstrates a commitment to sustainable architecture with a contemporary relevance and integrity. We are proud of the successes we have achieved through design competitions, and have had a number of our projects published in the architectural press.

We have worked on a variety of projects, ranging from small-scale community projects and private houses, to larger schemes in housing, education and the public realm. Our largest completed project to date is a £4.8M mixed housing and live/work scheme in Nottingham – Park Rock

our approach

We aim to produce architecture out of simple but innovative solutions that evolve out of the demands and constraints of each particular project. Within this process we aim to integrate structural, environmental and sustainability issues in a holistic approach, by collaborating closely with our engineering consultants. We have also collaborated with artists on a number of competition winning schemes – Islington Angel, Stamford and Salisbury.

Many of our projects have been carried out on difficult and demanding urban sites, situated in problematic areas or on sensitive city centre sites. Often budgets and programmes for these projects have been demanding, requiring imagination and commitment to extract the best value out of the site for the project. We have worked with a number of listed buildings – Willow House – as well as a scheduled ancient monument – Park Rock

As a practice we ensure that sustainability issues are at the forefront of our design considerations from inception through to construction. Our approach to energy consumption is to tailor appropriate and integral solutions for each particular project. We also have a commitment to considering the design and integration of the surrounding public realm, as the space in between buildings is as important to us as the buildings themselves.

We have an extensive track record in developing scheme ideas and the expertise to successfully take these through the Planning process. Our work with public sector clients has often required our involvement in extensive stakeholder consultation to engage the views and knowledge of interested parties and the wider public. The majority of our completed schemes have been delivered through traditional contracts, for which we have also acted as contract administrator.
